In an era where conversations about healthy eating and food safety are louder than ever, Jelli’s Market, a pick-your-own produce farm in Helenville, Wisconsin, stands as a beacon of trust and tradition. Since 2001, the Knoebel family has been dedicated to growing fresh, local and healthy food, a commitment that now spans generations.

“We have been raised on this produce, and we are now feeding it to our own kids, the next generation of Jelli’s Market employees,” says Libby. This deep-rooted connection to the land ensures that every customer receives food grown with care and integrity.

How do pesticides affect produce?

While Jelli’s Market is not certified organic, they employ Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to maintain crop health responsibly. Pests like bugs, diseases, fungi and molds lower the quality of produce. “We do a lot of ‘crop scouting’ where we go out into our produce fields and orchard to check for these bugs and diseases and decide what and when to spray based on our findings,” Libby explains.  By using targeted, minimal interventions only when needed, Jelli’s Market helps preserve the environment, reduce chemical use and maintain a healthy ecosystem on their farm.

A common misconception is that produce is heavily treated with chemicals. Addressing this, Libby notes, “In our spray tanks, 95% of what we are spraying on the crops is water, and 5% is the actual chemical.” Moreover, all products used are backed by science, governed by the Environmental Protection Agency and applied by certified individuals, ensuring adherence to strict safety standards.

Jelli’s Market offers a diverse array of pick-your-own seasonal fruits and vegetables, including strawberries, green peas, green beans, sweet corn, raspberries and blueberries. Their farm store also features farm-raised beef, pork, lamb and chicken, alongside local products like honey and maple syrup.

“Fifty years ago, everyone had a garden because they had the land and the time to dedicate to it,” Libby reflects. “But now, people are busy and don’t have the ability to have a garden in their backyard, so we can fill that need by growing acres of fresh produce for people to come pick themselves.” This not only provides access to fresh produce but also reconnects individuals with the source of their food.

How long does fresh produce last?

Fresh, local produce has a shorter shelf life because it’s picked at peak freshness. Libby advises, “You need to have a plan to use your fresh produce within days of buying it, or it will spoil.” To help customers enjoy their products year-round, Jelli’s Market offers tips are resources on properly storing and freezing produce.

Supporting local farms like Jelli’s Market not only benefits personal health but also strengthens the local economy. “When you support your local farmer, you are aiding in your local economy and supporting your friends and neighbors,” Libby emphasizes. Planning regular trips to local farms or farmers’ markets can inspire meal planning based on seasonal availability, enhancing both nutrition and flavor.
